When I discovered that I was in fact capable of feeling fear—not just feeling it, but having deep fears—I naturally bought rock climbing shoes

I would like to think that I did not learn to take baby steps. I am convinced that as soon as I could put one foot in front of the other, I started running with no plan on ever sitting down again.

I woke up with a calm heart that would usually be pounding out of my chest after dreams like this. For a second, I found myself wishing for the anxiety I used to have—the kind that forced me to do hard things in the face of danger.
